Albuquerque, Rio Rancho and Santa Fe Ant series continued....why is baiting for ants the best method for control and how does it work? We have learned that the worker ants(the ones you see) are only 10% of the colony. We put those worker ants to work for us(they just don't know it). As ant workers look for food, they are attracted to the sweet liquid in the ant bait. Once a forging worker ant has found a food source they drop what it called a ‘trail pheromone’ back to the nest, letting all the other worker ants know where a food supply has been found. This is why you initially see more ants. Most baits interferes with the ants' digestive systems, eventually killing the ants within 24-48 hours after consumption. So, while the stuff in the bait will ultimately kill the worker ant, it works slowly enough that the worker has time to get back and share the bait with the colony. That’s the only way to get rid of both the ants you see and the thousands you don’t.
